Bloomers attends the British Fair in Fukuoka and Osaka, Japan
Bloomers of Bakewell had an amazing opportunity of attending the British Fair in the Hankyu Department Store.
They were there serving their Original Bakewell Puddings to the locals of the amazing sub-tropical city of Fukuoka, before heading over to Japan’s 3rd largest city, Osaka, for the second half of the fair.
14,800 Bakewell Puddings were ordered for the fair and each one was baked in the UK, frozen and shipped out ready for the start of the event.
Over in Japan, the event was covered on TV with a Japanese presenter visiting their top 5 food stands – including Bloomers of Bakewell.
You can see the Bloomers segment about 2 min 50 secs into the video.
Bloomers’ own Richard Nealon made sure to keep everyone back home updated via the Bloomers of Bakewell Facebook page where he posted daily updates, as well as various photos taken of the fair and the wonderful people they met there.
The Day Before: Fukuoka Fair
“The British Food fair at Hankyu Dept Store opens tomorrow at 10.00. As we were setting up today we caught site of these great flyers…. so if you’re around, do drop in and see us!”
Fukuoka Fair begins!
“A lively start to the first day of the English food fair here at Hankyu in Fukuoka. By the front door you’ll find Toby and I in lights promoting the festival; walk past the Gucci and Tiffany windows and you’ll find us again!
There were 2 film crews this afternoon – one for some live TV, which had an instant impact on visitor numbers; and the other for breakfast TV in the morning.
Most importantly the puddings seem to be going down well!”
Osaka Fair begins!
“First day of the British fair at Hankyu Dept store has gotten off to a very busy start. The front window is filled with a picture of the shop back in Bakewell.
Last night there was a lovely reception and Toby was seen in both a jacket and tie!
Today the lovely Ms Mayumi Fujii came by to say hello – she has visited us many times in Bakewell and was thrilled when she discovered we were visiting her home town! It was a pleasure to see her again.”
“It’s Saturday lunchtime here in Osaka and it’s been a busy morning. The queue has been up to 50 folk long and we’ve sold nearly 1000 puddings!
Perhaps the most surreal moment of the trip so far: the brass band are doing a couple of sets today and have played a fantastic mixture of Beatles medleys; Last Night of the Proms bombast and sentimentality along with lots of other tunes the Japanese associate with Britain.
It was as I was serving another pudding, 12,000 miles from where they were made and the band struck up playing the March from Dambusters that I really lost my bearings.”
